It’s almost December! Which means it’s almost Christmas! Which means all the cinnamon in the universe is going to be showering down upon us. I LOVE this season. We may not have a remotely white Christmas, but cinnamon makes everything ok.
Whole bunch of fun, festive recipes involving cinnamon coming up next month 🙂 While you and I wait, try this very quick, very simple, very comforting hot cocoa. Milk, cocoa, sugar and cinnamon. Boiled together for one wonderful spiced, hot drink. I had to make this in the day because night shooting is tough. Turns out, this not only makes a great bedtime drink, it’s a great mid-morning chocolate hit too!
I went to Crawford Market last week to hunt out mixed peel to soak for my first ever Christmas cake (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) That place is nuts. I wanted to buy everything I saw, food, non-food, plants, baskets, random cane things….it’s a shopoholic’s nightmare, that place. Focus, I told myself. You need cinnamon. I have powdered cinnamon, but wanted those whole sticks as well because they look pretty while styling food. One guy wanted me to buy a whole kilo! I mean, I love cinnamon, but come on. I made my best puppy eyes and managed to get him to sell me just 100 gms which is still A LOT of cinnamon sticks. But they smell soooo good 🙂 Go to Crawford, people!
So this hot cocoa had to happen. A bit of cinnamon stick infused into the milk as it boils smells AWESOME. I threw in a little powder as well for a quicker way to flavour. Hot, chocolatey, cinnamony and oh-so-Christmasy 🙂
What you’ll need:
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup water (I didn’t want the cocoa to be very heavy, but you could use a whole cup of milk and omit the water if you like)
1 tbsp cocoa
1 tsp sugar, to taste
2-inch piece of cinnamon
1 tsp cinnamon powder
What to do:
1. Start by boiling the milk and water together, with the cinnamon stick and powder. Let this infuse for a couple of minutes.
2. After the milk-water mixture has boiled, add the cocoa and sugar, stir well, bring to a boil again and take it off the heat.
Welcome to cinnamon heaven 🙂 Also, have you tried my Red Wine Hot Chocolate?
